Cantillons settled a case for over €50,000 for a woman who had a surgical tampon left inside of her following an episiotomy procedure. In this case, the Plaintiff had given birth to her first child and required an episiotomy afterwards. The procedure was commenced by a Doctor who left the room half way through the procedure to tend to another emergency in the ward. The suturing was taken over by a Midwife who failed to recognise that a surgical tampon had been inserted by the Doctor. The Plaintiff was stitched up with the tampon still in situ. After roughly two weeks, the Plaintiff discovered the tampon which was an extremely traumatic event. The Plaintiff took a case for the psychological injury she suffered as a result of this unpleasant experience.
The case settled for over €50,000 and a letter of apology was issued by the Hospital to the Plaintiff.
