On the 19th February 2019, the Medical Negligence Team at Cantillons settled a case for €750,000 for the Tymon family.  Mr. Michael Tymon brought a claim for himself and his young daughters Rachel, Rebecca and Katelyn against their GP Dr. Martina Cogan following the death of their wife and mother, Mrs. Sheila Tymon.

On the morning of the 27th June 2013, the late Mrs. Tymon re-attended her GP Dr. Cogan with overt cardiac symptoms. Dr. Cogan either did not diagnose the symptoms as being cardiac or did not consider them acute enough to warrant immediate referral to Hospital.  A Post Mortem established that the cause of death was acute heart failure set against a background of significant cardiovascular disease which was undiagnosed previously. There is a particular poignancy to the case as the late Mrs. Tymon was only 42 years old when she died and she had attended Dr. Cogan on the morning of her death with cardiac symptoms.

Cantillons obtained reports from experts in General Practice, A+E Medicine and a Consultant Cardiologist who were of the opinion that if the late Mrs. Tymon had been referred for review, she would have survived.  This was heartbreaking for the family to hear.

Mr. Tymon made a short statement to the press which captured the essence of this case in layman terms see link below:-
